The winter months require deep nourishment. We need proper rest, sleep, relaxation and play to balance the activity, stress, and work in our lives. One way we can deeply nourish ourselves is to immerse ourselves in some detoxification. The term “detox” has become somewhat of a buzz word as it has been trending in celebrity circles the past several years. Let us define it here simply as a timeframe where we commit to eliminating added sugar, artificial chemicals, processed gunk, and junk. Our body is designed to run on pure, unpolluted, unprocessed fuel and giving it just that will improve how we feel physically and mentally, especially after our usual holiday extravagance.

Detoxes need to be designed uniquely for each season. A detox in the winter is much different than a spring or summer program. Our bodies adapt to the seasonal changes and it is important to honor those changes inside and out.  A spring detox would typically include many salads, green juices, and other raw cleansing foods. However, in cold weather, it’s important to consume more warm-natured foods to preserve the body’s optimal metabolic state when dealing with the freezing cold temperatures outside. The ingestion of too many cooling foods is depleting in the colder weather. Throughout the winter it is more appropriate to include broths, teas, and soups.

This detox is a simple whole foods cleanse. The foods are anti-inflammatory and seasonal to winter.
